MEAL DELIVERIES

AFF’s Relief Project delivers meals to the Children’s Cancer Centers at Texas Children’s Hospital and MD Anderson! We do this, firstly, to give families a choice other than cafeteria food. Secondly, we want to provide a free meal for families because food is not provided for the parents, and that cost can add up quickly. Thirdly, we want to make meals available for parents of small children because they might not be able to leave their child’s bedside. Meals served vary from a prepared box lunch of a sandwich and chips, to salad and pastas.

Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be in good health.
  • Volunteers must be 18 or older.
  • The maximum group size is 5 people per visit.

Commitment:

  • Meal deliveries rarely last more than 2 hours.
  • Parking/Valet costs $10 – $15.
  • Sensitivity is required. Please do not ask families any questions about their diagnosis, hospital stay, or future treatment. If they bring it up you may conversate with them, allowing them to share as much or as little information as they would like.

ERRAND RUNNING/GROCERY SHOPPING

Children receiving chemotherapy often have suppressed immune systems. This means that they may not be able to be in public spaces and risk a cold or infection, theses illnesses can be life threatening. Because of this, parents often have difficulty running everyday errands like grocery shopping.

Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be in good health.
  • Reliable transportation is needed.

Commitment:

  • Shopping and delivering groceries should not last more than 2-3 hours.
  • Sensitivity is required. Assume that families would prefer that food is left on the porch to limit the spread of germs.

LAWN CARE

During long hospital stays, parents are not home to keep up with their lawn/garden. Offering lawn maintenance beautifies the home for their return and it gives the family one less thing to worry about. The time of day is typically flexible, so this is the perfect volunteer opportunity for someone that is not able to give their time during the workday!

*If you have a lawn mower and would like to help, but have no hauling capability or vice versa, please let us know and we will try to make connections!

Requirements:

  • Lawn mower and possible weed eater/trimmer access is needed.
  • Reliable transportation capable of hauling the above-mentioned necessities.

Commitment:

  • Lawn sizes may vary, altering the time commitment for each service.
  • We serve families in the Greater Houston area, but will only match volunteers with locations that they are willing and able to travel to.
